  • Notes
    • George and his family were living in Pittsburg, Johnson, Arkansas in 1850. They arrived in Denton Co., Texas in 1851.

      From the Balaam family genealogy:

“two years later, from Denton County, he brought his family group across the southwestern plains to the west coast with a train of fifty ox-team pulled wagons. They traveled west through El Paso to Tucson, and on through Fort Yuma, in Arizona. The journey took them six months, and the entire trip was made in safety, except for a few stories remembered of adventures with the Apache Indians, who stole a small amount of their supplies.

...From Warner’s ranch, in San Diego County, their first stop in southern California, they went on to the Los Angeles area.

The Balaam families first located there in the small community of El Monte, about twelve miles east of Los Angeles. El Monte was at that time the largest settlement or colony of Americans in the southern part of this then new state, recently obtained from the Mexican government. Here George Balaam started stock raising with forty or fifty head of cattle, which he had brought with them from the South.

The Balaams remained there for four or five years, then the George Balaam Sr. family drove on up to Tulare County, arriving in either December of 1857 or January of 1858. They settled in the Four Creeks area of the San Joaquin Valley, one mile west of Farmersville in section one, where George Balaam, Sr. took up a raw tract homestead of one hundred and sixty acres.”

His first wife of many years died after a buggy accident in 1869 and he married Mary Brown six months later. However, although they were married in December of 1869, Mary was not living with George by the time the census was taken in July of 1870. Based on a biography of George Balaam Sr., it appears she left him shortly after they were married, and he filed for divorce in the Spring of 1871 and it was granted October 21, 1871. (In fact, Mary’s first child with John Harvey Lee was born in Inyo County, California two weeks earlier.)

George Balaam later moved to Cambria, California where he died.
