Notes |
- The family was living in Randolph Co., Indiana in 1860. They were living in Sabina, Clinton Co., Ohio in 1870 and Marion Twp., Clinton Co., Ohio in 1880. James and Margaret were living alone together in Jefferson Twp., Clinton Co., Ohio in 1900.
DNA evidence has proven that James Henry Taylor is not related to William Taylor and Elizabeth Rock. They are not even of the same haplogroup.
Our best guess at this point for the parents of James Henry Taylor are William and Jane E. (Hilldrup) Taylor of Pipe Creek Twp., Madison Co., Indiana. There is a James Taylor, their son, living with them in 1850 who is about the right age. They are from Virginia and located not far from where our James Henry Taylor was married. William Taylor was one of the earliest settlers in Madison County, Indiana. There are some people on Ancestry who have him in their public trees, but the parentage they have identified for him doesn't look right. It may be worth pursuing research on this family/area although a DNA test of one of his proven descendants would help a lot!
------------
Our branch of the Taylors "sort of" matches two other people in the Family Tree DNA database: Chris Timaeus and Luella Taylor's Lloyd Taylor. If you're interested, you can see all the multitudinous Taylors that have been tested by the project on this web page:
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/taylorfamilygenes/default.aspx?section=yresults
Scroll down to the "G" haplogroup. James Henry Taylor, 1835 VA - 1904 OH (Kit # 201074) is our Chris Taylor's test results. You will see it is in a section labeled G-42 Group 42. That has the two tests that approximately match his - one has 3 mismatches and the other has 4. The nearest common ancestor is around 12 generations (50-50 chance). Could be more, could be less. We had previously exchanged emails with those two folks and the farthest they can trace back is a Joseph Kneeland Taylor (1806 Alabama -1843 Texas).
One of the things I learned is that, in order to be related to someone through Y-DNA you must have the same Haplogroup. So I have ordered a more specific test against Chris's kit to get a "deep clades" haplogroup confirmation. I suspect it will end up G2a3b1 like Chris Timeaus. (The "G" next to Chris's data now was FTDNA's estimate). That will pretty much nail down our relationship to those two people.
OK, but here is the big news.
Since we CANNOT be related to someone in a different haplogroup, and a direct descendent of George Taylor (d. 1801 Montgomery Co., VA, father of Capt. Adam Taylor and grandfather of William Taylor) has had his DNA tested and came up with a haplogroup of R1b1a2, we do NOT descend from George Taylor-->Capt. Adam Taylor-->William Taylor.
You can see for yourself if you scroll down in the web page I linked earlier in this email to:
174838 George Taylor d 1801 Montgomery Co VA
which is in the R1b -15a group. Not only do the haplogroups mismatch, but most of the markers are different too (as one might expect with a different haplogroup!)
Since we never had any documentation for the relationship between James Henry Taylor and William and Elizabeth Rock (his supposed parents), I really don't know how that connection was determined. But, in any case, unless the other three people in the R1b-15a group did not confirm their relationship to George Taylor with traditional genealogical proof, we are not related to these people. I suspect they did do the research because there has been considerable discussion among them about that line and their ongoing research.
Unfortunately there are now a bunch of Ancestry public trees that show this erroneous connection between James Henry Taylor and William and Elizabeth Taylor now. I have already removed William and Elizabeth as James Henry Taylor's parents in our trees. I guess I will mention the above to some of the other tree owners and they can decide for themselves what they want to do.

RESEARCH: (Feb 2020) Contacted Clinton County Archives and Records Dept. that holds death record entries up to 1908 and they could not find any mention of James Henry Taylor or his wife in their records. [3, 4, 10]
