Notes |
- RESEARCH:
Elizabeth's maiden name appears both as Spickart and Spickard. William lists his mother’s name as Rebecca in his pension application, and Jane’s death certificate lists her as Mary (Jane’s son, Clifford, was the informant). She is buried as Elizabeth Bishir, however. It is odd that her children didn’t seem to know her first name!
Looking at the Spickard families in Highland Co. in the early to mid 1800s, we came to the conclusion that Elizabeth PROBABLY belonged to William Warren by process of elimination.
George Spickard Sr.’s will clearly defines his sons, who are potential fathers for Elizabeth. It didn't seem likely she could be the daughter of any of the younger boys since they weren't married and having children until the 1820s (George Jr., John Smith and Alexander) and Elizabeth's birth year hovers around 1814ish. That pretty much leaves only Thomas and William Warren Spickard as likely candidates.
According to the 1830 census, Thomas Spickard doesn't have a daughter at that time (one appears with Thomas by 1840, but Elizabeth is married by then). William Warren, however, has 2 girls between 10 and 15 and 3 between 15 and 20 in 1830. Other than Mary Ann and Margaret who appear in later censues, the three older girls are unaccounted for (we do not have names for them.) Elizabeth and Caroline could be among these older girls.
Other evidence suggests that Elizabeth belongs to William Warren. Caroline Gibler clearly is his daughter since William's widow, Jane Spickard, lived with her after William's death (1870 census), and Elizabeth Bishir and Caroline Gibler lived side by side in the 1850 census, with William and Jane just 2 doors away.
