Notes |
- Jonathan Gillam is listed as a PVT in D.A.R. Patriot Index, 1966.
Please note in "DAR Library Catalog, Vol. 1, 'Family Histories & Genealogy, 1982' " the following entry:
04996 GILLAM - Crider, Edward C.
Genealogy of the Jonathan Gillam Family
1938 190p.
20cm x 27cm typescript
Much information for Jonathan Gillam, his wives, and his sons, daughters, and their following generations was taken from the above booklet as provided from the library of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Washington DC. They are hereby given credit for all information about Jonathan Gillam, his wives, and his descendents.
The above cited Genealolgy by Edward Crider lists the Revolutionary War pension claim of Jonathan Gillam. His pension claim number was S-16824. His record has been used by, and may be used by, appropriate descendents for membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Following is from an article in "Persimmon Hill" (Cowboy Hall of Fame Magazine, Vol. 6, August 1976). The article is titled:
"Jonathan Gillam and The White Man's Burden," by C.L. Sonnichsen (who in 1990 lived in Tucson Arizona, and who after 1972 was editor of 'Journal of Arizona History' and the director of publications for the Arizona Historical Society.) Jonathan Gillam was the great-great-great grandfather of C.L. (Charles Leyland) Sonnichsen. WFT's Social Security records disc shows that a C. Sonnichsen was born 20 Sep 1901; and he died 29 Jun 1991 in Tucson AZ. His obituary is in several books listing writers, and he was a quite famous writer, primarily about the American West and Indians.
A portion of this article quotes from a story told by Jonathan Gillam:
"I was born in Lancaster County in Pennsylvania, was bound out by my father when four years old to one David Reed. When fifteen, my neighbors gave me a pair of shoes which were the first I ever had. Having no learning, I was told that when these circumstances happened, I was of the age above stated. My Master Reed moved from Lancaster over the mountains and settled on Col. Washington's land about three years before the Revolutionary War. From all the information I possess of my birth it was in the year 1753 as I believe myself to be now 79....."
"The Family of Jonathan Gillam Genealogy," (which correspondence from Adelene Gillam Smith states was provided by Mrs. Donald Wilfred Weaver of Forrest, Ohio) says: "...it is thought that he (Jonathan) had 3 brothers, John, James and Thomas."

Bottom of Form 1
Pam, Based on my research I have found several interesting bits of information. There was a genealogist named Edward C. Crider, who wrote up the Gillam family for the Indiana Genealogical Society. I believe they have copies of that write up. I show Peter Gillam in Jay County, Jackson Township for the 1850 census. I believe your Mary Carwile and Mary Garville are the same person. My research, so far, shows Jonathan, the son, was born in 1791, and his mother was by the first wife, I believe to be Sarah Vardaman. The Pennsylvania IGI record (Mar 1992, page 14,890) shows Jonothan and Sarah Vardaman, getting married in 1783 at the New Hanover Lutheran Church in Lancaster. Based on Ed Crider?s work and my hypothesis: Sarah?s date of death, and the movements of Jonathan and family are as follows:
Shortly after their marriage, Jonothan and Sarah returned to Redstone Settlement, Fayette County, PA.
Between 1783-1785, I believe they moved to Kentucky.
Around 1803 they moved to Indiana, I have him on the voter roll of Dearborn Co., IN in 1807.
He supposedly moved to Franklin County, but I believe he became a resident of Franklin County when that county was formed out of the large Dearborn County. In 1813 he got 160 acres located 2 miles West of Alpine, Fayette County, IN., where he eventually died and was buried.
Let me know if I can be of any help I am looking for proof that Jonathan and his first wife (Sarah) had a daughter as a first child named Sarah Sally Gillam.
* note by Debbie Horrocks
"Sally" is the common form of "Sarah" Therefore the name is likely to be "Sarah" ( not "Sarah Sally") with "Sally" being her nickname.
