Notes |
- Grant Oscar Baldwin served in the Civil War for the Union from the state of Ohio. He suffered enough minor injuries to produce a thick pile of pension records, including his honorable discharge. That document, signed by him, gave his birthdate of 4 June 1819 in Mason county, Kentucky. The next record of him is his marriage to Louisa Bishir in Highland county, Ohio, dated 20 Nov 1845. The 1850 & 1860 Censuses list the children of Grant and Louisa: Jacob O., Alice, Clara, Thomas, William, Francis, and Arthur.
Lived in Washington Twp., Fayette Co., Ohio in 1850. They moved to Highland Co. by 1860 and remained there through 1870. Grant served in the 89th Ohio Vol. Inf. during the Civil War and was in the Veterans Reserve Corps. The family moved from Ohio to Illinois around 1871 and then from Illinois to Kansas around 1878. Grant (who lists himself as divorced) and his son, William, appear in 1880 in Saline, Kansas. He appears again with his youngest son, Alfred, in the 1885 Kansas census.
