  • Notes
    • The family lived in Kaweah/Mineral King, California in 1880. They were squatting on the north side of Yokohl Creek in Yokohl, Tulare Co., CA in 1888 and 1890 and 1898. They were in Ashland, Oregon in 1900.

      ------------

The John Hector family came across the plains in 1854 and the William Lee family had come in 1850. After wandering around the state they had settled near the river north of Exeter. After being flooded in the late 1860’s both families moved to Yokohl. Harley Lee married Lavina Hector in 1875 and built a large home somewhat east of the Emmett Gill home. It had a wide front room suitable for square dancing and it soon became one of the social center of Yokohl.

Social affairs were largely home made. Most talked about were the dances held at the Harley Lee home or at the school at which Joe Myer played his fiddle.

Excerpted from: History of the state of California and biographical record of the San Joaquin
Valley, California. An historical story of the state's marvelous growth from
its earliest settlement to the present time., Prof. Jame Miller Guinn, A.M., 1905.

WILLIAM HARLEY LEE. While Mr. Lee is a native of Missouri, nearly his entire life has
been passed in California. He has been successful in his chosen vocation, and this suc-
cess is the result of his own labors. Coming to the state, many years ago he has been an eye-
witness of the rapid growth and development of California, and has taken a prominent part in the
      improvement of Tulare county.

Mr. Lee was born October 30, 1849, m Howard county, Mo. [...]

William Harley Lee was but a babe in arms when his parents crossed the plains, so that his
first remembrance of life is in California. Here he was raised on his father's farm and received
his education in the Deep Creek school district. In 1869 he located in the Yokohl valley where he
engaged in farming and stock-raising. At the age of eighteen he homesteaded the one hundred
and sixty acres where he now resides. This place he has improved and placed under a high
state of cultivation, making it one of the finest ranches in this section of the county. From
time to time he has added to his original purchase until he now owns eight hundred and sixty
acres, most of which is in the valley. In addition to farming, Mr. Lee is interested in stock-
raising, making a specialty of Short-horn cattle. Aside from his farming and stock-raising,
Mr. Lee is also engaged in teaming, using eight horses and three wagons to haul talc or soap-
stone to Exeter ; he is also interested in various other enterprises.

In the Yokohl valley Mr. Lee married Miss Livinia Hector, a native of Iowa, and a daughter
of John Hector. Six children have been born to them, namely: Nettie Eliza married Samuel
Combs, of Yokohl; Emma Louisa, the wife of George Hall, of Chico ; Hettie May married
Warren Awbery, and died in Exeter in May, 1903; Laura Belle, at home; William Edmond
of Chico, and Rena Ethel, also living at home.

Mr. Lee votes the Democratic ticket, but he has never had the time to take an active inter-
est in politics, preferring rather to devote his entire attention to his own business interests.
As a result of this application, he has accumulated a handsome property, and now he and his
estimable wife have reached the age when they are in a position to enjoy themselves. Both are
very popular and have a large circle of friends who wish for them many years of happiness. [3, 5, 6, 7, 10, 15, 16]
