“SPECK’S CAFE” “On Sept. 1, 1920, Speck’s Cafe or “Speck’s Place” opened its doors to the public. In September of 1938, Speck’s Cafe relocated on the corner of Main and McPherson Streets. A swap shop was added to the cafe in 1940. G.O. “Speck” and Ruth Baldwin operated nine cafes in various locations in Canton over the years. G. Orville Baldwin was the son of Frank and Emma (Ledbetter) Baldwin, and was born and raised in Canton. He lived here until his death in 1957.”
On page 45 of the “Canton, Kansas Historical Book”, Grant O. Baldwin is listed as a charter member of the Canton Post of the American Legion #192, dated Jan. 26, 1920.
On his WWI Draft Card, Grant incorrectly states his father’s birthplace as Hillsbourough, Illinois. It was Hillsboro, Ohio. He was probably in his early teens when his father passed away between 1910-1915. He is described on the draft card as being of medium height, and medium build, with brown hair and brown eyes.
